Armed assailants opened fire at a candidate desirous of contesting elections for the post of Sarpanch in Bhai Ladhu village. The incident took place in the late hours on July 5 when four armed men came to the house of Gurmit Singh and opened fire. The accused Sukhdev Singh, Gurchet Singh, his brother Harpreet Singh of Bhai Ladhu and Jagga Singh of Algo Kothi village armed with weapons also threatened Gurmit Singh, asking him not to contest the election for the post of Sarpanch. The accused also attacked his first uncle Harjit Singh and injured him.

ASI Jatinderpal Singh from Patti Sadar police said that a case under Section 109, 115, 351 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused who fled from the spot after committing the crime.
