A special campaign has been launched to intensively checking two-wheeler riders with suspicious movements, especially those riding their vehicles without the registration number plate.

Yesterday, pro-Khalistan slogans and graffities were found scribbled on the walls of a temple, the district courts and Khalsa College. The banned organization, Sikhs for Justice, has taken the responsibility of the same. This has alarmed Punjab police, which took a slew of measures so that such instances are not repeated ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.

“The city police were already on high alert in view of the Independence Day celebrations. Apart from strengthening the security, police officials, including Deputy Commissioners of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioners of Police and Assistant Commissioners of Police have been asked to remain in the field in order to control law and order,” he said.

Additionally, a close watch has been kept at those notorious criminals who are out on bail. Hotels are being checked to trace the movements of anti-social elements, besides verifying the antecendents of the tenants.

“Special cordon and search operations are being organised in different parts of the city,” he said, adding that shifting nakas are also being held. All the entry and exit points have been sealed by putting up permanent checkpoints, said the Police Commissioner.
