Newly appointed Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill will assume charge on Monday. Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Shergill stated that it was a matter of great fortune to be able to serve the holy city of Amritsar. Shergill is no stranger to the Local Bodies Department, having earlier served as Commissioner of the Bathinda Municipal Corporation from 2019 to 2021. He has also worked in various departments of the Punjab Government and said his focus in Amritsar would be on addressing civic issues through direct engagement with residents.

One of the biggest challenges awaiting the new Municipal Commissioner will be to successfully finalise and implement the tenders issued for solid waste management in the city. Waste disposal and sanitation have remained a pressing concern in Amritsar, especially after the exit of the private solid waste management company that was previously engaged by the Municipal Corporation. It may be recalled that outgoing Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh, during his 10-month tenure, had taken several important initiatives to improve the city’s cleanliness.
