Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsAfter gaining re-entry in the Kapil Sharma show, Navjot Singh Sidhu today visited Amritsar, signalling his political ambition in the next state assembly election. Sidhu will reappear in the comedy show after a gap of six years. He is expecting a similar comeback in politics now.
Cricket fans are enthused that they managed to see the former Indian cricketer and cricket commentator, known for power-packed description and catchy one-liners, while watching cricket fixtures but the electorate of Amritsar East assembly segment are not fortunate enough.
Talking to mediapersons, Sidhu said, “It is not a new role as I have been pursuing politics for a long time. To earn a living for the family in the right way, I have been making efforts. The day Noni, referring to his wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was to be taken overseas for treatment of cancer, I did not have enough money to foot the bills. It was so because I joined politics to provide clean governance to people and not to fill the pockets. The day somebody will ask me to work for the welfare of people, I will join him.”
Accusing the erstwhile governments, he said, “All those governments which governed Punjab for the past three decades were run by the mafia, all protected mafia. Nobody gave the policies to lead the Punjabis.” About its solution, he said an honest person is required to kill this mafia.
Without naming the AAP government, he said governments are being run by taking loans these days. He clarified that his mission is politics and Punjab is his love.
His close political allies said he would certainly contest the forthcoming election. About his long awaited visit to his constituency, they informed that ward leaders visited and interacted with him. These days, Sidhu is staying in the city and could visit the constituency anytime.
The electorate of his home constituency have been waiting for the former PPCC president of whom 32,929 had voted in the 2022 assembly election (coming second as AAP won the seat) and voted him to power in the 2017 election. He did not visit them after the 2022 election. He paid a visit today at a tea shop in the Civil Lines area but did not visit his home constituency.
Similarly, a section of the local Congress leaders are irked at Sidhu for not canvassing for the Congress nominee from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, who won the election.
