A snatcher attacked a police party with a sharp-edged weapon when they surrounded him on the road leading from Dabouri to Tarn Taran Road here.

A cop was injured and the accused, identified as Govind Singh, alias Govinda, of Chabba village was arrested by the police team. A bike and a sharp-edged weapon were recovered from him.

ADCP Vishaljit Singh said Kanwaljit Singh of Kot Mit Singh area located on the Amritsar-Tarn Taran road told the police that a bike-borne person had snatched his mobile phone when he was returning home from his college. The incident occurred on October 30.

He said the police team was manning a checkpoint on the Daburji link road when they signalled a motorcycle-borne youth to stop. When the biker saw the police party, he tried to take a U-turn and escape from the spot, but his motorcycle slipped and he fell down.

He said as the police team surrounded him, constable Daljit Singh tried to catch him, but he took out a sharp-edged weapon and attacked him. He sustained an injury in the arm, but the accused was overpowered and arrested.

He said Govinda had three criminal cases of snatching and theft registered against him at the D Division and Sultanwind police station in Amritsar Police Commissionerate and an FIR at the Chatiwind police station.
