A three-day memorial service is being held for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at the Bhai Vir Singh Niwas Asthaan on Lawrence Road in the city. The service is being held for the general public, who want to pay their tribute to the statesman and visionary leader.

The former PM had served as the chairman of Bhai Vir Singh Sahit Sadan, working for the revival of literature and legacy of Bhai Vir Singh, a noted Sikh scholar and philanthropist.

Remembering the contribution made by Dr Manmohan Singh in organising lectures on Bhai Vir Singh’s perspective of Guru Nanak’s ideology, to promoting literary works by the Sikh intellectuals, president of Dilbir Foundation Gunbir Singh said that the memorial was a way to help people, who knew Dr Singh, pay their respects.

“The service is being held at the Bhai Vir Singh Niwas Asthaan fom January 1 to January 3, and citizens of Amritsar can visit Bhai Vir Singh Niwas Asthaan, Lawrence Road, anytime to pay floral tributes to Dr Manmohan Singh. Being a loved citizen of Amritsar as well as the Finance Minister and Prime Minister of the country, Dr Manmohan Singh has left a lasting imprint on people’s minds as a leader,” he said.

DCC holds condolence meeting

On behalf of the District Congress Committee, an all-religious condolence meeting dedicated to the country’s first Sikh Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was organised on Thursday. Senior leaders and councillors of the district participated and paid tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh.

Senior Congress leaders Om Prakash Soni, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhsarkaria, Sunil Dutti, Jugal Kishore Sharma, Ashwini Pappu, Dinesh Bassi, Dr Raj Kumar Verka, Sunil Dutti, Rajkanwal Preet Pal Singh Lucky, Vikas Soni, Tarsem Singh DC, Gurmeet Singh Bhilowal, Navdeep besides all the councillors including Singh Majitha and Navtejpal Singh were present on the occasion.
