As part of their call for bandh, members of the Valmiki community staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) here on Sunday.

The protesters stopped the Amritsar-Delhi Shatabdi train near the Vallah railway crossing. Besides, they forcibly got shops closed in various markets, including Hall Bazaar.

Members of the Muslim and the Sikh community also participated in the protest.

Ravinder Kumar Hans, convener, Phule Ambedkar Joint Action Committee, said, “The BJP government is trying to change the basic structure of the Constitution. Draconian citizenship laws will not only affect the Muslim community but also the Valmiki community. In the coming days, protests will be organised to force government to roll back these laws.”

Hans said around 50 associations and organisations took part in the protest on Sunday.
