A team of five students from Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nawankot, has brought laurels to the district and state with their work getting shortlisted among top 40 projects for Wipro Earthian Awards 2023 the results of which were announced on Saturday.

Wipro Earthian is a sustainability education programme of Wipro Foundation organised by CPR Environmental Education Centre, Chennai. The programme involves innovative project submission on sustainability of water, biodiversity and waste management by a group of students guided by their teacher.

The five students – Vanshika, Janvi, Pratibha, Aish and Anmol, along with their guide teacher Shubhkiran —- made the Nawankot school the only one from Amritsar and among two schools from Punjab to be shortlisted. “Another school from Patiala got selected. The team worked on the theme of biodiversity and explored its various aspects. It puts together various aspects of biodiversity and its application besides the impact of sustainable practices,” shared Shubhkiran.

Shubhkiran has also worked on the project of promoting vermi-composting as a sustainable agriculture practice, along with a team of her students.

“The project is mainly focused on helping students to learn out of classroom by doing some interesting activities. Since most of the students studying in government schools come from a humble background with limited means and do not have much resources, we give them an opportunity to learn through practical application and enable them to apply innovative learning to use. Then they compile the project report based on their observations from activities. Projects are assessed on the basis of creativity and originality of the report,” explained Shubhkiran.
