The incident occurred recently in Kothe Gharala village on the outskirts of the city. The video was recorded by the son of the daughter-in-law.
The elderly woman is seen repeatedly pleading with her son to intervene, while her daughter-in-law keeps pulling her hair, slapping, hitting and verbally abusing her.
Taking suo-motu notice, the Punjab State Commission for Women has asked Gurdaspur SSP Aditya to submit an action-taken report by this evening. The Commission has directed the SSP to have the matter investigated by a senior police officer.
The incident took place in the presence of the victim’s grandson, who managed to record the episode on his phone.
The police have identified the woman as Harjeet Kaur and her mother-in-law as Gurbhajan Kaur. A property dispute is said to have
triggered the conflict.
A police officer said that the cops visited the house to record Gurbhajan Kaur’s statement, but citing family reasons, she declined
to speak.
