Young karate player Harshita Tiwari wins bronze in International tourney

Young karate player Harshita Tiwari has brought laurels to her school and city by winning a bronze medal in a Karate-Do international tournament recently held in Malaysia.

Harshita, a class VIII student of Army Public School, Tibri Cantonment, demonstrated remarkable skill and determination to secure third place. Karate-Do, a Japanese martial art, emphasizes self-defence through striking, kicking, and blocking without the use of weapons. Beyond physical conditioning, it also focuses on character development through rigorous training in basic drills.

According to her coaches, Harshita faced tough and experienced competitors but performed admirably to earn the bronze medal. Romesh Mahajan, national awardee and honorary secretary of the Gurdaspur Karate-Do Association, stated that young athletes from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, and India participated in the tournament.

Harshita’s coach, Gurwant Singh, 5th Dan Black Belt and national referee, mentors young karatekas in the district. Under his guidance, many athletes from Gurdaspur have excelled in national and international championships. Karate coaching in the district is conducted at the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls, Dak Khaana Chowk, Gurdaspur.
