Amritsar, August 1
A youth identified as Gurjit Singh, a resident of the Mattewal police station area, ended his life by jumping into a canal here. He had gone missing on July 26.
Following a complaint lodged by his relative Hardeep Singh, a resident of Boparai village, the police have booked five persons, including his fiancée, on the charge of abetment to suicide. The Mattewal police said the suspects were yet to be arrested.
Those booked were identified as victim’s fiancée Kanwaljit Kaur, Gurmukh Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Balkar Singh and Bachni, all residents of Udoke Kalan village.
Hardeep Singh stated to the police that his brother-in-law Gurjit Singh was a carpenter. He said Gurjit had got engaged with Kanwaljit Kaur. However, she broke the engagement and refused to marry the victim. He said Gurjit was very upset due to this. He repeatedly kept asking about the reasons for breaking the engagement from Kanwaljit Kaur and her family. The complainant also alleged that the suspects had insulted Gurjit.
Disturbed over this, Gurjit left home on July 26. His family members tried to locate him, but in vain. On Tuesday, his body was found in a canal.
Khushboo Sharma, SHO, Mattewal police station, said the body of the deceased was handed over to the family after an autopsy and further investigation was initiated into the matter. No arrests had been made till now, the SHO said.
