Chandigarh, December 14

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the Punjab Government to release a grant for the purchase of school uniform by eligible students within two weeks. Disposing of a PIL (public interest litigation) filed by advocate Hari Chand Arora, the Bench directed the State, its Education Secretary and the Union Human Resources Department Secretary to initiate steps for providing grant to below poverty line (BPL) students of Classes I to VIII, belonging to SC/ST/BPL categories, and girl students of government schools within two weeks.

The petitioner had stated in the PIL that winter had set in, but the state government had failed to credit a grant of Rs 600 each per annum into the bank accounts of eligible students.
