Kanchan, 36, a resident of Ludhiana who belonged to a family of migrant workers and spoke Punjabi fluently, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the night of June 11 in her car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan, along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway. Her decomposed body was recovered from the rear seat of the car after locals complained of a foul smell.

On June 13, Amritpal Singh Mehron, a Nihang, in a purported video claimed responsibility for the murder. The police later arrested his two alleged accomplices – Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh, both Nihangs – who were sent to judicial custody.

The police have already said Amritpal fled to the UAE just hours after the murder on June 10, even before a lookout circular (LOC) could be issued against him. A LOC has also been issued against Ranjit.

It claimed the murder was an act of “moral policing”. Further, in a purported video, Amritpal claimed he had earlier warned Kanchan to stop posting “inappropriate” content on social media. However, his counsel has claimed that the video might be AI-generated.

A postmortem report prepared by a panel of three doctors pointed out “mark congestion present over external genitalia along with congestion over the inner side of the upper part of thighs.” It concluded, “The cause of death, in our opinion, is asphyxia due to strangulation, which is sufficient to cause death in the ordinary course of nature.” The samples were sent for analysis to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, but the report is awaited.

Speaking to The Tribune, Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal said, “The viscera report is still pending. LOC has been issued for both the accused. Open-dated warrants have been obtained for Mehron, and a proclamation application is under process.”
