The five-day workshop on data sciences for researchers organised by the Department of Computer Science and Technology concluded at the Central University of Punjab here on Friday.

The university organised the workshop under the aegis of AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL) Academy Programmes from December 16 to 20. The main focus of the workshop was on development of quality technical education in the country.

Pro RK Kohli, VC, Central University of Punjab, presided over the valedictory session of the workshop. Prof P Ramarao, Dean (Academic Affairs), and Prof Anjana Munshi, Dean (Research), also attended the session. More than 50 faculty members and research scholars from different institutes of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh participated in the workshop.

In the beginning, Dr Satwinder Singh, programme coordinator, presented a report on the workshop.

Resource persons Dr Ashok Kumar, Dr Harmandeep Singh and Dr Gaurav Kumar gave insights into various topics related to data sciences. During the workshop, the participants learnt about basics of statistics, machine learning, Microsoft azure and big data analysis using different tools like hadoop, hive, spark and pyspark.

The VC said, “Data sciences is an emerging field and it has vast opportunities for researchers. New insights gained through statistical and critical analysis of big data can play a vital role in identifying future risks and finding needful solutions to various societal problems.” He urged youngsters for judicious use of big data for the benefit of society.

Prof P Ramarao raised his concerns over current threats in keeping personal data safe. Besides, he encouraged the researchers to find solutions to this issue. During this session, top 24 participants were awarded books on data sciences as the reward for their performance based on the merit.
