The SHO of a police station in Faridkot was placed under suspension after an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) municipal councillor staged a protest against him and announced resignation from all party posts today.

In a dramatic turn of events outside City Kotwali Police Station, AAP councillor Vijay Chhabra staged a dharna against the local SHO after he was allegedly threatened and misbehaved with when he approached the police to register a complaint regarding a stolen scooter.

Chhabra alleged that he had accompanied a local resident of his ward to lodge a complaint about the theft of a scooter. He claimed that he and the victim were visiting the police station for the last over one week to get the complaint lodged, but no action was being taken. Today, when he again went to the police station to speak to SHO Sanjeev Kumar, the discussion became heated. The councillor alleged that the SHO used abusive language and even threatened to implicate him in a false case.

Angered over the SHO’s alleged behaviour, the councillor sat on a dharna outside the police station, soon joined by a large number of local residents and supporters. DSP Tarlochan Singh reached the spot, assured the protesters that the theft case would be registered immediately, and persuaded the SHO to apologise for his conduct. Following this intervention, the protest was called off.

However, councillor Vijay Chhabra said he was deeply hurt by the behaviour of the police and disappointed by the lack of support from his own party. “Leaders and workers of other political parties stood by me during the protest, but not a single AAP representative came forward. This indifference has compelled me to resign from all positions in the party,” he announced.

Meanwhile, DSP Tarlochan Singh said that SHO Sanjeev Kumar had been placed under suspension. He confirmed that there had been a delay in registering the scooter theft case, but said the issue had now been resolved amicably.
