An Audiometry machine was introduced for hearing-impaired children at the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) operating from the premises of Civil Hospital. The machine measures auditory acuity of hearing-impaired persons to assist in proper diagnosis. The DEIC operates under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) which is aimed at early intervention for children from birth to till 18 years to cover 4 Ds, that is, defects at birth, deficiencies, diseases, development delays, including disability.

Talking to Bathinda Tribune, audiologist and speech language pathologist, Tania Manchanda, said: “Earlier, we had to refer children to Faridkot for evaluation or diagnosis of hearing impairment. But with the installation of the audiometry machine at the DEIC, it will help in measuring the degree of impairment in children so that treatment can be provided accordingly.”
“The machine will be instrumental in measuring the degree of deafness in hearing-impaired children and early intervention,” said Manchanda.
Dr Amrik Singh Sandhu, Bathinda Civil Surgeon; Dr Kundal Pal, District Immunisation Officer; and Manphool Singh, district co-coordinator of the RBSK among other officials of district Health Department were present during the inauguration of the new machine.
