The MC removed a number of encroachments along the Mall Road here on Tuesday. A team of the Tehbazari wing reached the Mall road and started removing vends along the Mall Road in the afternoon.

The anti-encroachment drive was conducted under tehabzari wing’s Inspector Parmidner Singh Cheema and Superintendent Pargat Singh. The vendors, who had occupied empty space near the Mall Road, were earlier directed to remove their kiosks and vends on numerous occasions by MC officials.

There were complaints raised by residents that since the area along the road was encroached upon by these vendors, the movement of commuters as well as pedestrians used to get disrupted on a daily basis. Despite repeated reminders, these vend owners did not move from the place, so the MC took action against them.

The team officials removed encroachments from along the Mall Road, near the railway station and near Hanuman Chowk. Approximately two dozen of vends were removed during the drive.

Superintendent Pargat Singh said, “The decision was taken keeping in view the rising traffic volume on city roads. Once we get directions from the Municipal Commissioner Bathinda, these vends would be handed over to their respective owners.”

A large number of police personnel were deployed to assist the MC officials for the smooth functioning of the drive.
