Lifestyle changes can cure PCOS, says expert

A lecture on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), its symptoms, causes and management was organised at SSD Girls’ College here. The event was held by faculty members of the post graduate Department of Mathematics. Funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the event was organised under the guidance of Dr Parminder Kaur Tanghi and Taru Mittal HOD Mathematics.

Dr Preeti Khetarpal, Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Medicine, Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, delivered a lecture on the event.

Dr Khetarpal said, “The disease, PCOS, is caused due to hormonal imbalance and has an impact on reproductive system making it difficult for women to conceive. The symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods and certain physical changes such as excess facial and body hair, weight gain, darkened skin patches and mood swings among others. Regarding the treatment of PCOS, she said, “There is no cure for PCOS but it can be controlled through weight loss, healthy diet, regular exercise and meditation.”

College president Sanjay Goyal, senior vice-president Parmod Maheshwari and general secretary Chander Shekhar Mittal were among other members from the college management that were present during the event.
