Bathinda, January 15
For the implementation of the ban imposed on the sale of Chinese strings in the city, a delegation of the Association of Active NGOs submitted a memorandum to SSP Nanak Singh here on Wednesday.
Sandeep Aggarwal from Jiwan Jyoti Welfare Club, Ashish Bansal from Sri Ganesh Welfare Society, Ramesh Dandh from Vanvasi Kalyan Asram, Sanjiv Goyal from Grahak Jago, Tekchand from Animal Care, advocate Sunil Tripathi from Gayatri Parivar and Abhishek Bansal from Naujawan Welfare Society were part of the delegation.
The delegation members said NGOs were campaigning against the use of Chinese string as many persons had lost their lives and some got injured due to it in the past. They added that youngsters are being made aware of its ill-effects.
Commuters are most vulnerable as some contact with the Chinese thread can cause severe injuries. In some cases, people have sustained serious injuries in the past. It is also a big threat to birds.
The SSP assured the delegation that this year as well, the police keep a check on those who use banned Chinese strings. The SSP said a drive would be launched against it. The SSP added that action will be taken if anyone gets caught with Chinese strings.
“There is a complete ban on selling, storing, buying, using and producing Chinese strings and whoever violates the norms will be booked under non-bailable sections of the IPC. We also exhort city residents to inform us if they see anybody selling or using Chinese string,” the SSP added.
Sonu Maheshwari, president, NGO Naujawa Welfare Society, said “The deadly Chinese string is harmful for humans as well as animals and birds. With students and NGOs spreading awareness and the police assisting them, the problem can be resolved completely.”
The Chinese string is made of polythene and is flexible as compared to the traditional local string. Besides, the chemical coated on it makes the thread sharp and dangerous. The colours used in the string make it less visible. There is also a risk of electrocution as the string is a good conductor of electricity.
