Members of the Punjab Students’ Union (PSU) on Monday staged protests at Government Rajindra College and Industrial Training Institute (ITI) against gang rape and murder of a veterinary doctor in Hyderabad.

PSU state leader Sangeeta Rani said, “The Hyderabad incident is not first and last instance as such cases are on the rise at an alarming pace in our country. To stop such incidents, many laws had been passed, but these are not implemented. These stay only on papers.”

Kiranjit Kaur, a PSU member, said, “By only making laws, we can’t stop such incidents. We need to have a discussion in schools and colleges to create mental awareness among the masses because the main reason behind such incidents is an anti-woman mindset, which we need to change.”

Another member of the union Gurbaksh Singh said the Indian government was not concerned about the security of women. He said, “A female doctor in Faridkot has been running from pillar to post to get justice in a physical harassment incident for the past few days. Entire students of Faridkot college are with the victim and demand justice for her.”
