Two days after the Sangrur tragedy, in which four schoolchildren were burnt alive in a school van, the Faridkot Regional Transport Authorities (RTA) on Monday started a special checking of school vehicles under the Safe School Vahan Scheme (SSVS). The authorities checked a total of 335 school vehicles in Muktsar, Moga and Faridkot districts.

While 24 vehicles were impounded, 136 vehicles were challaned for violating the scheme guidelines. A maximum of 14 vehicles were impounded by RTA officials, followed by five vehicles by Jaito SDM, three by Gidderbaha SDM and two vehicles by Malout SDM. In Muktsar, the traffic police and the SDM inspected 65 school vehicles and challaned 41. In Gidderbaha, 71 vehicles were checked, of which 20 were challaned. In Kotkapura, the SDM challaned 24 vehicles. Out of total 32 vehicles checked in Jaito, 17 vehicles were challaned and five were impounded. — TNS
