Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal said the sports utility vehicle (SUV) used in the crime was purchased by key mastermind Amritpal Singh Mehron from a resident of Rohtak in Haryana. “However, he did not get that vehicle transferred in his name,” the SSP claimed.
As per the police theory, the SUV was used by Amritpal and his aides to visit Kanchan’s house in Ludhiana and conduct recce before her murder. “They tried to burn the waistband used to strangle her and left the body on the rear seat of her car, which was later found in a decomposed state,” said a senior officer.
The body was found in the car parked outside Adesh University at Bhucho Kalan along the Bathinda-Chandigarh highway on the night of June 11.
Amritpal reportedly fled to the UAE after the murder. His alleged associate Ranjit Singh from Tarn Taran district and another unidentified suspect were still on the run. Two of their alleged accomplices, Jaspreet Singh and Nimaratjeet Singh, are in judicial custody.
The police claimed that the motive behind the murder was moral policing. Kanchan, a resident of Ludhiana, had nearly 4 lakh followers on Instagram.
