A European Union court on Wednesday delivered a hammer blow to the bloc’s attempts to rein in sweetheart tax deals between MNCs and individual member countries when it ruled that Apple does not have to pay $15 billion in back taxes to Ireland. The EU Commission had claimed in 2016 that Apple had an illegal tax deal with Irish authorities that allowed it to pay extremely low rates. — AP

The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising five eminent persons as trustees.
