Singapore PM pushes for biotech, AI expansion with ‘trusted partner’ India

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Tuesday underlined his country’s “confidence in India,” citing New Delhi’s consistent actions and strong track record as the foundation of bilateral ties.

Speaking after an interaction with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Core Group, Wong said discussions with Indian business leaders focused on expanding cooperation in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), biotechnology, green energy, and semiconductors.

“This will not only open up new opportunities for our economies, but also strengthen the dynamism and growth of Asia as a whole,” he said.

He noted that Singapore had been India’s largest foreign investor for the past seven years and its top trading partner in ASEAN.

After interacting with business leaders, Wong also met Health Minister JP Nadda.

Nadda said the meeting was a meaningful exchange on strengthening party-to-party ties and institutionalising delegation-level interactions.

Both leaders also discussed expanding collaboration in healthcare and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the well-being and prosperity of people in both countries.

Wong arrived in New Delhi last evening for a two-day official visit — his first trip to India since assuming office. He is accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation that includes Cabinet ministers and senior officials.

On September 4, the Singapore leader will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Modi, with discussions expected to focus on trade, investment, digital innovation, defense, regional security and global challenges.

He will also call on President Droupadi Murmu and meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other senior leaders.
