Two unidentified youths robbed 2-kg gold and 15-kg silver worth about Rs 2.5 crore from a jewellery shop in Dhakoli here around 12:40 pm today.

The shop owner, Govind, said his father Surinder Kwatra was at the shop when two youths arrived there around 11:30 am. They enquired about a gold chain and left the shop.

Both came back an hour alter and took the elderly man hostage. They tied him up and dragged him upstairs. The robbers threatened his father with dire consequences, claiming that they had a pistol in the pocket.

The youths removed all jewellery from the showcases and the safe within 10-12 minutes and fled the spot on their bike.

The shop owner said the youths also took away the CCTV camera recorder. His father managed to free himself and raise the alarm.

Local residents said the nearby shops were closed. They informed the police, after which a forensic team reached the spot.

The police said they were scanning the footage of the nearby CCTV cameras.

‘Gunshots fired’ at Mohali office

Mohali: In a suspected extortion attempt, a Sector 82 realtor claimed that unidentified youths fired gunshots outside his office in IT City on Thursday afternoon.

Sources said two bike-borne youths were seen carrying a weapon. The police have registered a complaint. Teams of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) are probing the case and verifying if any extortion call was made to the businessman, said the police.

IT City filling station worker assaulted

In another case, six bike-borne youths thrashed a filling station employee on the Airport Road in IT City on Thursday evening. Baidwan Filling Station owner Jatinder Singh Baidwan said two bike-borne youths had an argument with an employee after which they called their friends and thrashed the worker. The victim sustained grievous head injuries and was admitted to the Phase 6 Civil Hospital.

The police said the suspects had been identified through CCTV footage and would be arrested soon.

Past incidents in Zirakpur

April 16, 2025: Four robbers looted Rs 80,000 cash and silver ornaments at gunpoint from a jewellery shop in Shiva Enclave, Pabhat, in broad daylight. They were nabbed later.

Oct 15, 2024: Two bike-borne youths looted a jewellery shop in the Lohgarh. Sam Soni, owner of Divya Jeweller, alleged that two masked robbers entered his shop around 2:30 pm and pointed a pistol at him. They took away a jewellery box, which contained gold and silver jewellery.
