The police said a case under Sections 323, 341, 506 and 34 of the IPC and of 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, had been registered against the girl’s father Harpreet Singh, uncle Balwinder Singh and grandmother Kamla Devi at the Handesra police station.

Handesra police in-charge Gursewak Singh said, “The child was beaten badly on Saturday and admitted to the Civil Hospital by the neighbours on Sunday. They also informed the Child Helpline No. 1098 about the case. A counsellor was requisitioned following which the statement of the girl was recorded.”

The police said preliminary investigation revealed that the child was allegedly beaten and left in the open at night after she could not tell about a lost gold bangle. Earlier, the girl and her younger brother were living with a relative due to a discord in the family.

Both the father and the grandmother denied having beaten the child, though they said they had rebuked her on Saturday. —
