50 emergency sirens to be installed across city
The UT Administration has upgraded the Emergency Operations Command Centre with the aim of improving communication systems and strengthening coordination with neighbouring states and security forces.
According to officials, the steps included increasing the number of emergency sirens from 20 to 50 so that every nook and corner of the city was covered and residents get timely alerts in case of air raid, or other emergencies.
With upgrade of communication system, they would get accurate and faster alert, they said, while adding that 15 sirens had already arrived and the rest would reach soon. These sirens would be installed in such a way that almost the entire area of the city was covered.
Armed with satellite phones and advanced technologies, the centre will work for emergency coordination with various departments, security agencies and disaster management teams of other states.
The centre will check potential threats and ensure a quick response in case of emergency. A five-member team will work in three shifts round the clock, stated the officials.
The UT Administration will also train 3,000 civil defence volunteers to deal with any emergency situation. The training will be imparted by Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration in Sector-26. The youth will be given 15 days training in a variety of tasks. These volunteers will be divided according to the sector and village, where a civil defence warden will be appointed for each zone.
After training, they will be deployed in different areas and will be officially enrolled as Civil Defence Volunteers.
This initiative will not only improve the response time in emergency situations, but will also strengthen the spirit of cooperation and awareness in the society.
