Chandigarh, March 30

The Municipal Corporation (MC) and the UT Estate Office held a joint anti-encroachment drive at the motor market in Sector 48 here today and issued 54 challans.

Cops accompanied the officials conducting the joint drive which was held from 10 am to 2 pm. The authorities also seized dumped cars and spare parts kept there for a long time. Each encroacher will have to pay Rs2,000 to clear the challan and get the confiscated material back.

Such drives were conducted earlier too, but the situation did not improve. It seems paying a fine of mere Rs2,000 for encroaching a huge space is not proving to be a deterrent for the violators.

Interestingly, the MC issues a challan of Rs10,000 with no goods return policy in case of encroachment by illegal vendors.
