Amendment to Shop & Establishment Act sought

A Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM) delegation has given a suggestion to the Chandigarh Administration to exempt all establishments having up to 20 workers from the provisions of the Shop and Establishment Act.

The Labour Department, Chandigarh Administration, had invited traders for their suggestions on the proposal mooted by the Government of India for amending the Act.

Sanjeev Chadha, president the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, along with over 15 representatives from various markets, held a meeting with the Labour Department, Chandigarh. The meeting was organised by Assistant Labour Commissioner Akshay Mital.

The mandal advocated for exemption from the Shop Act for all shops employing less than 20 employees, a move expected to provide significant relief to traders burdened by complex laws and regulations. They said that the exemption was likely to generate more employment and revenue in city markets and promote better employer-employee relationships.

They emphasised that this move would encourage businesses to grow, create more jobs and foster a more positive work environment.

The officers assured that the suggestions would be sent to the government for amendment in the said Act.
