On a day Local Government Minister Dr Ravjot Singh spoke about developing all civic bodies in Mohali district into clean and aesthetically pleasing towns, members of two sanitation employees unions held a protest at the Mohali Municipal Corporation office.

Presiding over a review meeting with senior officials of the district, the minister said Municipal Councils of Kharar, Dera Bassi, Rajpura, Banur, Zirakpur, Lalru, Nayagaon, Gharuan and Kurali will be developed. Singh stressed that landscaping, road development, beautification of villages under Mohali city, besides construction of buildings should be done as per byelaws.

The minister directed that all projects must be completed within stipulated time. Prominent among those present at meeting include Additional Chief Secretary Tejvir Singh, PMIDC CEO Deepti Uppal, Local Government Joint Director Jagdeep Sehgal, Mohali MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, ADC (Urban Development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, Chief Engineer Naresh Batta and Executive Officers of Kharar, Dera Bassi, Rajpura, Banur, Zirakpur, Lalru, Nayagaon, Gharuan and Kurali MCs.

Sloganeering, sit-in protest at MC office

Fresh trouble brewed in Mohali, which is grappling with garbage disposal issue for past one year, when members of two sanitation employees unions the Municipal Corporation clashed inside the MC Commissioner office today. They resorted to sloganeering and staged a sit-in over the issue of attendance.

A group of sanitation workers threatened to go on a strike if the issue was not resolved promptly. Sources said a union member had heated arguments with MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh.

“It is a minor issue over employees attendance. In the heat of moment, youngsters say something, but we all are a family,” Singh said downplaying the incident.
