Lt Col JS Kanwar (retd), father of Maj Sandeep Shankla who was decorated with Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award, passed away in Panchkula after a brief illness on Saturday. He was 89. Maj Shankla was awarded Ashok Chakra in August 1991 for making the supreme sacrifice during a counter-terrorist operation at Zafarkhani village in Kupwara. Nine terrorists were neutralised during the operation, 22 were apprehended and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered.
