The northern regional office of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrated World Standards Day here today.

This year’s theme was "Shared Vision for a Better World – Spotlight on SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals", highlighting the importance of collaboration in achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs).

In her welcome address, Sneh Lata, Deputy Director General, BIS, Northern Regional Office, emphasised the importance of World Standards Day in raising awareness among regulators, industry, consumers and society about the critical role of standardisation in national and global economic development.

She highlighted BIS’ work in diverse fields such as infrastructure development, civil engineering, innovation and artificial intelligence, all of which significantly enhance the quality of life for the common man. She also mentioned the increasing number of certifications under BIS schemes, reflecting growing confidence among stakeholders.

Justice Lalit Batra (retd), former Chairperson, Haryana Human Rights Commission, underlined the pivotal role of standards in achieving global goals and fostering a resilient future.

Dr Ravindra Khaiwal, Professor of Environmental Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh, gave a presentation on "Role of BIS in Achieving SDGs: Challenges & Opportunities for Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure in the Age of AI." Dr Poonam, Assistant Professor, Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, held a session on "How AI Can Help Foster Innovation in the Industrial Sector and Promote Sustainability".

The event saw participation from industry representatives, BIS licensees, consumer organisations and other stakeholders.
