All Bar associations from the district today boycotted work to support the Nangal Bar Association’s demand for chambers in the local court. In a meeting held at Nangal, the members of Bar associations from different parts of the district said that they had gathered there to support call.

Paramjit Singh, former president of the district bar association of Ropar, while talking to mediapersons said the Nangal court was set up at a temporary accommodation given by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) back in 2018.

However, till date, no space has been allocated for advocates at the court complex to cater to their clients. “During the monsoon season, the lawyers in Nangal court have to brave rains in the open to cater to their clients. Today, a state wide call was given for boycott of work to support the Nangal Bar association. No court work was transacted by the lawyers today to support the call,” he said.

Notably, members of the Nangal Bar Association have been boycotting work for more than a week to press for their demand.

Navdeep Hira, president of the association, said the lawyers had at their own expense put up a temporary tin shed to make sitting arrangement for them and their clients.

“Despite assurances by the district administration, the BBMB has stopped the work of construction of temporary sheds. We are ready to enter an agreement with the BBMB to vacate the temporary sheds once the Nangal court moves to its permanent building. However, the BBMB authorities were not allowing us to put the temporary sheds due to which we have boycotted the court work till the issue is resolved,” he further said.

Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party state unit vice-president Subhash Sharma had recently met with the BBMB chairperson along with a delegation of lawyers to discuss and resolve the issue.
