Bassi Pathana residents protest open dumping of waste

Residents of Bassi Pathana protested against the dumping of garbage on the outskirts of town by the Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib Municipal Council (MC).

Raising concerns over the foul smell and stench emanating from the garbage, they said the civic body began dumping waste in the town after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) fined the council for throwing garbage at the earlier site near Sirhind Choe.

Bassi Pathana Senior Citizens Association president ML Verma said the residents had raised their issue before the Deputy Commissioner and Chief Minister, following which the former referred the matter to the Civil Surgeon.

They further added that the Civil Surgeon in its report said the continued dumping of waste might lead to an outbreak of diseases in the town as the site was near the industrial as well as residential areas.

The residents demanded that the garbage dumped here by the Sirhind Fatehgarh Sahib MC should be re-allocated to any other place in their own town, otherwise they would be forced to launch an agitation.

When contacted, MC president Ashok Sood he said the process to shift the dump was underway and tenders have been floated in this regard.
