Can differently abled persons enjoy a visit to Sector 17? Is the UT Administration following the guidelines for a barrier-free built environment for the disabled and the elderly? Most of the ramps at the Sector 17 Plaza are tattered and broken without railings on both sides, leaving an uneven and dangerous walking surface for shoppers. On entering the Plaza, the main tourist attraction of Chandigarh, one can feel the plight of the Municipal Corporation as the corridors are marked with broken old tiles, which are an eyesore to the visitors. Not only one feels unsafe to walk on these corridors and ramps, but it may lead to twisted ankles or foot injuries. It seems the civic authority is in deep slumber and busy in driving away the vendors from the heart of the city rather than taking interest in beautifying the place. — BM Dhawan, Chandigarh

This refers to a news report, ‘Road work stopped midway, commuters at receiving end’, published in these columns on January 2. Several road stretches in the city are still in bad shape, while the repair works have been stopped midway and the same is likely to resume around February 15. What else could explain the fact that though the MC received Rs 15 crore from the UT Administration for recarpeting of roads in October, the work has moved only at a snail’s pace leaving the commuters quite high and dry? In fact, the pathetic condition of most of its thus far ‘unattended’ roads reveals the inside story of the civic body. Mind you, MC Commissioner KK Yadav himself has categorically stated that “We will complete the pending road works within six months after February 15.” So, the hapless residents will have to wait at least till July/August before the city’s various potholed and damaged roads are made worthy of being used by them. What an irony? — SK Gupta, Panchkula

Is a civic issue bothering you? Are you agitated over the lack of concern? Is there something heartening that you feel needs to be highlighted? Or a picture which in your opinion ought to be seen by many, and not just you?
