Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths today nabbed a UT ASI while accepting a bribe of Rs10,000.

The CBI had received a complaint from Dharmpal, who is part of the house keeping staff at the 3BRD Airforce station, Chandigarh. He alleged that ASI Harbhajan Singh, posted at the Sector 34 police station, was demanding bribe from him.

The police had received a complaint from a financer against Dharmpal for the alleged non-payment of a loan amount. The ASI was seeking bribe from Dharmpal for not registering a case against him.

In 2018, Dharmpal had taken a loan of Rs3.20 lakh from Mittal Financer in Sector 32. Dharmpal paid 29 installments of Rs16,000 each, total Rs4.64 lakh, till October 2020. He claimed that he stopped paying the installments as the financer was not giving him the receipts.

Dharmpal reported that he had received a call from the ASI on February 4, who asked him to meet at Sector 32. Dharmpal went to meet the ASI on February 5 and the ASI allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 bribe from him. The complainant gave him Rs3,000 on the spot and the remaining amount was to be given later.

Dharmpal was supposed to give Rs10,000 to ASI today. He informed the CBI following which a trap was laid and the ASI was caught red-handed.

The CBI has registered a case against the ASI, who will be produced in a local court tomorrow.
