A 23-year-old Punjab Police constable suffered a gunshot wound under mysterious circumstances at a Sector 22 hotel here in the wee hours today. The bullet was fired from his AK-47 service rifle.
Constable Deepak Singh, along with Constable Ankit, had checked into Hotel Diamond Plaza around 1 am. Around 5.30 am, the hotel staff heard a gunshot from the room. They knocked at the door, but nobody initially answered.
Ankit later opened the door and Deepak was found in a pool of blood. Preliminary investigation suggested the gunshot was fired accidentally.
The bullet pierced through the victim’s stomach area, the bathroom wall, before shattering glass on another wall in the hotel’s corridor.
DSP (Central) Gurmukh Singh said Ankit claimed the victim had gone to the washroom and taken the rifle along. After some time, he heard the gunshot.
“We are investigating as to how the victim suffered the injury. He was taken to the PGI where he is undergoing treatment,” said the DSP.
A team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Sector 36, was called in by the police to examine the scene.
The two cops are attached to a Gurdaspur-based property dealer, Simranjit, who had come to Chandigarh and was putting up at a hotel in Sector 35. The two cops had rented a room at the Sector 22 hotel.
The cops have seized the weapon and initiated an investigation at the Sector 17 police station.
