The poll buzz is palpable as the canvassing for the high stakes polls has started. The club has 1,800 registered voting members, including top bureaucrats, politicians, golfers, businessmen and the city’s who’s who.
The elections assume all the more significance this time, as no voting was held last time and the current house was elected unanimously. While one group has already announced its candidates, the other team is likely to decide on their nominees soon. Ravibir Singh Grewal, the current president, was elected to the top post unanimously last year. He had bagged 790 votes, while his rival got 389.
The voting, this time, will be held after a gap of one year with Major Rajinder Singh Virk (Lalli), leading one team. As per the announcement made by the group on various platforms, Lalli will be contesting for the top post with the support of his team, including Dr SPS Grewal, Sandy Lehal, Gags Aulakh, Alamgir Grewal, Dr Atul Sachdev, Brig TS Mundi, Shona Singh, Munish Arora, Dr GS Kochhar and Jassi Toor.
The 2024 elections had witnessed a record turnout with 1,183 members exercising their voting right. Grewal, who was appointed as acting president of the club in 2016-17 after the death of the then president Ishwar Partap Singh Mann, won the election in the following year by 94 votes. He was also elected unopposed in 2020-21 and repeated the feat last year.
Meanwhile, Lalli had contested the 2023 elections and lost by a margin of 29 votes. While his rival received 591 votes, Lalli polled 562. In the previous year, the CGC witnessed a ‘triangular’ fight for the first time that. Lalli got 406 votes and lost by a margin of 99 votes. This year. some of the team members contesting from the Lalli group had earlier contested from the other group — making it a high stakes battle this time.
Besides electing the president, the voters will also pick 11 executive committee members on January 25.
