Chandigarh lad Krish shines at Junior World Golf championship

Local golfer Krish Chawla, a student of Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26, proved his mettle during the Junior World Golf Championship held at the renowned South Course at Torrey Pines — the site of the 2021 US Open. Chawla battled tough conditions, including high winds, and posted a 4-over-par, to secure overall 56th position with a total of 11-over-par (overall) on his debut.

Among the Indian contingent, Delhi’s Vidhan Jain finished 80th with a 4-over final round (total 14-over), Kolkata’s Anshul Mishra ended at 103rd with a 4-over final round (total 17-over) and Chandigarh’s Anupam Dhaiya finished 205th with 14-over final round (total 33-over).

Chawla, who is India’s No 1 ranked junior golfer, competed in his first-ever tournament in the United States and made a strong impression in round 2 with a brilliant 2-under-par round. The round featured six birdies, including a remarkable streak of three consecutive birdies on holes 11, 12 and 13. This placed him tied for first in the entire field for the longest birdie streak — an impressive feat on such a demanding course.

The Junior World Championship, founded in 1968, attracts over 1,250 participants from 56 countries and 42 US states. The boys’ 15-18 category featured more than 220 players, making it competitive.
