Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has decided to bear the cost of cremating poor COVID-19 victims, officials said on Wednesday.

The decision was taken after Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma and Municipal Commissioner KK Yadav did rounds of cremation grounds at Manimajra, Industrial area Phase-1 and Sector 25.

Cremation grounds have been asked to display a break-up of the cost on signboards.

The development comes after city Congress president Subhash Chawla and leader of opposition Devinder Singh Babla flagged the exorbitant prices being charged for cremating COVID patients. They claimed cremation grounds were charging between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,000 to cremate COVID patients.
