Chandigarh reported 44 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday—the biggest single-day spike yet for the union territory—an evening medical bulletin showed.

Twenty-eight of the 44 who tested positive were contacts of already diagnosed cases—mostly family members. Six of these cases came from Khuda Lahora, five from Sector 44, two from Sector 20, four from Dhanas, two from Sectors 47 and 41, one each from Sectors 7, 42, 22, 19, and Kishangarh. Apart from this, contacts of previously diagnosed cases also tested positive in Dhanas and Sector 32.

Eight of those who tested positive were over 60—of these, five over 65 and three over 70.

Of the remaining cases, three of a family tested positive in Sector 46. Sectors 16, 23, 26, 40, 41, 42, 45, 49, 55, Raipur Khurd, Khuda Jassu and Ram Darbar all reported a case each.

Chandigarh now has 978 cases, more than a quarter of which (353 cases) are now active. The UT has reported 14 deaths so far.
