The city today witnessed its coldest May day in a decade. It recorded a maximum temperature of 29°C, 10 degrees below normal. Before this, it was in 2011 that May saw the maximum temperature dropping to 28.6°C, lower than that recorded today.

The Met Department has forecast that the maximum temperature will start increasing from tomorrow and is likely to go up to 36°C by May 16.

“There are two main reasons behind it. A long period of western disturbance has been witnessed this time. Though rain activity is there, it still less than what was expected this month. There has been rain in the hills and it has led to a cool breeze in the city. It has further brought down the temperature,” said a Chandigarh Met Department official.

According to the weatherman, Friday is likely to see a cloudy sky, while Saturday and Sunday are likely to see a partly cloudy and clear sky, respectively. The minimum temperature in the city today was 21.4°C, one degree below normal. It is expected to increase to 23°C by May 16.
