The teachers at government schools will follow a dress code once a week after July 20. The UT Education Department has finalised the dress code.

Earlier, the department had announced to implement the dress code starting this month, but the order was declared null and void after concerns were raised about the colour of the teachers’ uniform.

As per new order, the uniform is to be worn once a week, preferably on Monday, \Band on special days as directed by the DEO or the school principal.

“When teachers follow a dress code, it reinforces the importance of uniformity, discipline and adherence to school norms. The uniform reflects a sense of discipline and professionalism. Just as we expect our students to present themselves uniformly, it is equally important for the faculty to represent the school with the same spirit and identity,” read the recent order.

It further stated, “The Education Department is introducing a school uniform policy for all faculty and teaching staff, effective from July 20. The uniform policy will also promote a professional image, enhance school identity and reduce workplace disparities.”

In April this year, the department had announced to introduce a dress code for teachers — making Chandigarh the first city in the country to implement uniform for schoolteachers. The initiative, taken by the department on advice of UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, was first introduced at the PM Shri Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 14, Dhanas. In January, the Administrator had proposed the introduction of uniform for teachers.
