The complainant, an Inspector of the Vigilance Bureau, stated that the house was searched in connection with an alleged corruption case registered under Sections 7 and 7-A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, by the bureau.

During the search, many live cartridges were recovered from his house. On investigation, it came to light that 41 live cartridges of 7.65 mm, two of .32 bore and 30 of .22 bore were not endorsed on arm licence. The corruption case against Popli was registered for allegedly demanding commission of Rs 7 lakh from a contractor for clearance of tenders for laying of sewerage line at Nawanshahr on June 20, 2022.
