Chargesheet filed against three for forging ‘nikahnama’

The Chandigarh Police have filed a chargesheet against three persons, including a woman, in a case registered for performing an inter-faith marriage allegedly by using fake signatures of witnesses.

The chargesheet has been filed against woman, her husband Asif Khan and Maulvi Sakil Ahmed under Section 318 (4), 338,336(3), 340(2) and 3 (5) of the BNS.

Initially, a zero FIR was registered on August 7, 2024, at a police station in Fatehgarh Sahib district on the complaint of one Amandeep Singh. He reported that on July 6, Asif Khan and a woman conducted ‘nikah’ in the presence of Molvi Sakil Ahmed in an autorickshaw at Khuda Alisher village, Chandigarh.

The complainant claimed that fake signatures were used for preparing a marriage certificate (‘nikahnama’). He claimed names of Amandeep Singh and Hardeep Singh, along with their signatures, had been mentioned in the marriage certificate wherein they had clearly stated that neither did they participate in the marriage nor signed the ‘nikahnama’.The zero FIR was transferred to Chandigarh and a fresh FIR was registered under Sections 318 (4), 338, 336(3), 340(2), and 3 (5) of the BNS at the Sector 11 Police Station.

During investigation, accused Molvi Sakil Ahmed was arrested and ‘nikahnama’ register was recovered from him.

Earlier, a Chandigarh court had dismissed an anticipatory bail application of the woman in September in this case. In the anticipatory bail application, the woman, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, had denied allegations that she was in love with Asif Khan and performed marriage with him by way of ‘nikah’.

Since some persons were against the love marriage, the police lodged the FIR on the ground that signatures of the witnesses on the ‘nikahnama’ were forged. However, the court denied anticipatory bail to her.
