Despite warnings issued by the authorities, children were seen playing dangerously close to the Ghaggar river, which is in spate following heavy monsoon rain in the region.

The Irrigation and Water Resources Department has installed warning boards prominently along riverbanks and vulnerable points. The red-colour signage, in both Hindi and English, clearly states that the river is prone to sudden flooding due to heavy rainfall and that entry into it is strictly prohibited. Violators may face a fine of Rs 2,000.

“The areas close to the river are extremely dangerous during the monsoon. Many people have been swept away by the fast currents in the past,” said a senior department official. “The warning boards are meant to save lives, but enforcement remains a challenge.” Despite these efforts, children were seen loitering near the riverbank, some even going close to the edge, even as debris and muddy water rushed past. Local residents doubted the effectiveness of the warning boards without active monitoring.

“Boards alone aren’t enough. There must be stricter patrolling by the local authorities,” said a resident of Sector 19. “Children often don’t understand the danger.”

Sarita Devi, another resident, added, “Every monsoon we fear for the safety of children in our colony. The water level in the river can rise suddenly.”

The authorities have urged parents to remain vigilant and are considering strict enforcement to prevent any mishap during the monsoon season.
