Despite a 141-run innings by opener Arjun Azad, Chandigarh suffered an innings and 75-run defeat against Goa in the Ranji Trophy opener played at the GCA Academy, Porvorim, in Goa on Saturday.

Resuming their second innings at 159/3, Azad stood tall and scored a marathon 141 off 216 balls, including 16 boundaries.

Bhagmender Lather (38) and AK Kaushik (82) contributed in a 153-run partnership that briefly lifted Chandigarh’s hopes.

Lower-order contributions from unbeaten Mayank Sidhu (33) and the tail added valuable runs to the tally but regular wickets saw Chandigarh all out for 354, falling short by an innings and 75.

Earlier, Goa had posted a massive 556 in their first innings while Chandigarh’s first innings ended in a dismissal 137.
