Mohali, February 16

Landran village on the outskirts of Mohali presents a very grim picture when it comes to cleanliness. Heaps of garbage can seen scattered on the roadside.

Litter scattered in the open has become a nuisance for residents and commuters who pass through Landran junction. Residents alleged that numerous accidents have occurred due to the presence of stray cattle on the spot.

Netarpal Singh, an employee of HDFC bank said around 90 per cent shops in the market does not have dustbins. As a result, shop owners and vendors throw waste on the roadside.

Paramjit Kaur Landran, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee member, said, “There is no income source for the village panchayat. It is totally dependent on the government funds. A special grant is needed to improve sewerage in the village, but the state government has not paid any heed to date.”

Moreover, the village has been declared open defecation-free (ODF) under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but reality is more than meets the eye.

Paramjit said the village is zero per cent ODF.

Hiten Kapila, Block Development and Panchayat Officer, said, “The matter was not in my notice. I am going to check it.”

He added that solid waste management project would soon be started in the village.
