Congress leaders, senior police officials visit residence of late IPS officer to console family

A stream of political leaders and senior police officials visited the residence of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar in Sector 24 here on Saturday to express solidarity with the bereaved family and offer condolences.

Among the prominent visitors were Congress General Secretary (Organisation) Randeep Singh Surjewala and Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky, who met the officer’s family and conveyed their party’s support. The two leaders also spoke to the media, terming the incident “deeply tragic” and urging a fair and transparent probe into the circumstances leading to the officer’s death.

Bathinda Rural MLA Amit Rattan Kotfatta, the brother of Amneet P Kumar, wife of the deceased officer, was also seen interacting with the media outside the residence. Reiterating the family’s faith in justice, he thanked those who had come forward to stand by them during this difficult time.

He said, “My brother-in-law’s body was being shifted without the family’s consent and in our absence. Humare saath dhakka ho raha hai (Our family is being pressured). It’s unfortunate that an ADGP level officer shot himself, and even after five days, we are no closer to justice.”

Earlier in the day, Chandigarh Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Sagar Preet Hooda visited the residence to pay his respects. The DGP met the grieving family members and assured them of all possible institutional support.

In addition, Haryana Cabinet ministers and senior Congress leaders also reached the residence, reflecting the growing concern and attention the case has drawn across the political and administrative spectrum.

The death of the IPS officer earlier this week has sparked widespread discussion within both bureaucratic and political circles, with calls for accountability and justice continuing to grow.

As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) begins its work into the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death, the outpouring of support at his residence stood as a symbol of shared grief and the collective call for truth and justice.
