Dera Bassi, November 10

A fire broke out at a spinning mill on the Barwala road here this evening, reducing a huge quantity of cotton lying in the open to ashes.

Fire officials said sacks containing old and new cotton caught fire near the spinning mill possibly due to bursting of firecrackers in the area.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot from Dera Bassi to control the blaze. Fire officials were controlling the blaze at the spot till the filing of report.

Eyewitnesses said no loss of life was reported. However, cotton worth lakhs kept near the Chandigarh Spinning Mill was gutted. Sacks were kept in the open and away from the main plant, which averted loss to the machinery.
